Dem candidate gets elected to the House in surprise win — and has a court appearance for car theft next week

Fresh off her surprise win in Tuesday’s midterm election, North Carolina Democrat LaKesha Womack is set to appear in court next week on a felony car theft charge.

Womack, one of more than 40 Democrats who flipped Republican-held House seats in the blue wave election, defeated GOP Rep. Tim Moore in North Carolina’s 14th Congressional District — just weeks after being served the felony summons at a campaign event.

It’s unclear if the criminal case will delay Womack from being sworn in to Congress on Jan. 3.

Womack is accused of failing to return a rental car — valued at about $20,000 — in 2019.

A North Carolina House race pitted $59,000 against an incumbent's $3 million—and the challenger won

In a blue wave midterm that swept Democrats into power in previously Republican strongholds, even major money couldn’t make the difference, and one race in North Carolina is the perfect example.

In North Carolina’s 14th Congressional District, which stretches from the suburbs of Charlotte to the Western North Carolina mountains, Democratic political newcomer LaKesha Womack unseated Rep. Tim Moore, the influential former state House speaker who helped draw the district and dominated it in 2024.

Moore outraised Womack more than 50 to 1, with a war chest of $3 million compared to $59,000 raised by his Democratic opponent, according to Axios. Even still, Womack narrowly beat out Moore in the midterm election Tuesday by about 6,400 votes, ending the Republican’s time in Congress after just one term.

How LaKesha Womack's $56,000 campaign (and President Trump) sunk powerful Republican Tim Moore

North Carolina Republican lawmakers drew the state’s congressional map to favor the GOP in 11 of the 14 seats.

Most of those districts were created to have so many conservative voters that it was inconceivable that a Democrat could win.

Then came Tuesday night — and a Democratic wave that stunned the state’s Republican congressional delegation, including one of the state’s best-known and most powerful Republicans, former state House Speaker Tim Moore.

When he was speaker of the state House, Moore helped draw the congressional map that included a seat tailor-made for him.

It included some Democratic areas of western Mecklenburg County, but most of the voters were in red counties: Gaston, Rutherford, Burke and Moore’s home of Cleveland County.
