Your guide to the 2026 TCS NYC Marathon
NEW YORK (WABC) — Fifty years ago, the New York City Marathon ran through all five boroughs for the first time. Just over 2,000 competitors took part in that seventh running of the race, including only 88 women. Now about 60,000 runners will step up to the starting line Sunday, with nearly half of them women.
The 2026 TCS New York City Marathon is shaping up to be one of the deepest and most competitive editions in race history.
Millions of spectators will line the streets from Staten Island to Central Park.
For the first time in 15 years, the course will change slightly. Runners will take a slightly different route in Mile 20, when the race is in the Bronx. The move reduces the number of turns in the borough from seven to five and will also ease some street closures in the area.
Here are the Upper West Side Street Closures to Know About on Marathon Sunday
The New York City Marathon will happen on Sunday, which means there will be lots of street closures on the Upper West Side.
Marathon Sunday is a day to celebrate athletic achievement, but it is also a day not to travel more than you need, especially if you’re trying to get across town.
The race begins at 8 a.m. with the Men’s Wheelchair Division. Since the marathon ends in Central Park, the Upper West Side is also where the “Family Reunion” areas are set up, which help runners find their loved ones after the race is over. This means our neighborhood has a few more street closures than most.
