Martha Stewart says people need to get it through their ‘thick skulls’ that there’s ‘no such thing as balance’

Martha Stewart’s career has spanned Wall Street, television sets, the modeling studio, and even federal prison. Through it all, the lifestyle mogul has built a business empire worth an estimated $400 million today.

But achieving that kind of success has come at a cost: Stewart believes the idea of perfectly balancing work and life is a myth.

“There is no such thing as balance—just get that through your thick skulls,” Stewart said earlier this month in conversation with Vivian Tu, who runs the social media account Your Rich BFF. “You can’t balance it. It doesn’t balance.”

Major life events, including marriage and divorce, inevitably throw things off course, Stewart said. And while she acknowledged that some people may occasionally manage to strike a balance, she isn’t convinced it’s the norm.

Martha Stewart rips people with ‘thick skulls’ who believe in work-life balance: ‘No such thing’

The homemaking mogul, 85, revealed during a recent podcast appearance that she believes there is “no such thing” as “balance” when asked how she’s able to manage both her personal life with her empire.

“Just get that through your thick skulls. You can’t balance it, it doesn’t balance,” Stewart told financial expert Vivian Tu during a live taping of the “Richer Lives by SoFi” podcast.

“You’re gonna get divorced if you’re going to get divorced. You’re going to get married three times if you’re going to get married three times. It just doesn’t work out,” Stewart said.

Entrepreneurs seeking work-life balance are chasing a myth, according to US-based lifestyle mogul Martha Stewart, who believes real success requires a full-time grind. The businesswoman, who has a net worth of about $400 million ( ₹3,796 crore), said: “You can’t balance It. It doesn’t balance."

“There is no such thing as balance—just get that through your thick skulls,” Stewart was quoted as saying by Fortune.

The 85-year-old, who initially started a food-related business and eventually built a larger company focused on home furnishings, dismissed the idea of work-life balance. She said she arrives at the office by 7 am. The publication reported that she also expects her team to start early.
