Pitt faces daunting challenge of containing Malachi Toney, Miami’s many offensive weapons
When Pitt plays at No. 1 Miami on Saturday and looks to shut down star receiver Malachi Toney, fans could be forgiven for assuming the Panthers will try to limit his impact by simply double-teaming him.
Toney, one of the nation’s leading wideouts who has 50 receptions for 758 yards and eight scores, is far from the first or last playmaker Pitt will face this season and beyond.
But for coach Pat Narduzzi, drawing up the proper defensive scheme to contain Toney and account for Miami’s other offensive weapons is more complex than giving the Hurricanes sophomore wideout extra attention.
“It’s not like they’ve got Malachi Toney and nobody else,” Narduzzi said of the Hurricanes (6-0, 4-0 ACC). “You double him, they’ll run the ball down your throat. It’s simple for them to say, ‘OK, (Pitt wants) to do that? We’re going to do this.’ You pay some other way. Best thing to do is be sound against him, know where he is and play good football. That’s what we do.”
