Verdict reached in trial of man who killed sheriff's deputy
Rodney Hinton Jr., who killed a sheriff's deputy last year by driving into him, has been found guilty of charges including murder.
The jury of seven women and five men in Hamilton County Common Pleas Court rejected 40-year-old Hinton's plea of not guilty by reason of insanity. While jurors convicted him of murder, they chose not to convict on more serious charges of aggravated murder. They instead found Hinton guilty of reckless homicide.
A murder conviction in Ohio carries a mandatory sentence of 15 years to life in prison.
The case centered on whether Hinton, who is mentally ill, intentionally drove his car into Hamilton County sheriff's Deputy Larry Henderson on May 2, 2025.
Jury deliberations continue Thursday in Rodney Hinton Jr. murder trial
A Hamilton County jury did not reach a verdict in six hours on day one of their deliberations. They will continue on Thursday morning at 9:00 a.m. The panel of twelve jurors has to be unanimous in their decision, or they are considered a “hung jury,” which results in a mistrial.
In the case of a mistrial, prosecutors can choose to retry the case with a new jury.
The jury will decide if Rodney Hinton Jr. intentionally killed a Hamilton County Sheriff’s Deputy, was legally insane at the time, or committed a lesser offense. On May 2nd, 2025, Hinton hit and killed Hamilton County Sheriff’s Deputy Larry Henderson with his car. The day before, he watched his son killed by police on body camera video.
