McDavid off to torrid start with Babcock’s ‘detailed, structured’ Oilers
Edmonton captain leads NHL with 23 points in eight games, team 6-1-1 under new coach
EDMONTON — Connor McDavid is off to the best offensive start in his NHL career, but his focus is elsewhere.
“I care more about how the game looks overall, and how it feels out there,” the Edmonton Oilers captain said Monday. “It’s been good at times, and there’s been times where I feel like I can do more and everyone can do more. That’s more important.”
McDavid leads the NHL with 23 points (six goals, 17 assists) in eight games for the Oilers, who have won six of them (6-1-1). He has at least one point in each and already has two five-point games, the 15th and 16th of his career. He is off to the best start offensively through eight games since Mario Lemieux had 27 points (10 goals, 17 assists) with the Pittsburgh Penguins in 1995-96.
Connor McDavid enters rarified air with early-season points pace
At this point, we must carve out a minute simply to appreciate Connor McDavid’s magic.
McDavid recorded his second five-point game of the fledgling season on Saturday during Edmonton’s 6-2 smashing of a good Mammoth club in Utah. McDavid is up to 23 points through eight contests, and the only player in the history of the league to better that pace is Mario Lemieux.
If you can believe it, No. 66 put up 27 points in eight games in both 1995-96 and 1992-93, while — wait for it — producing 31 points in eight games to begin the 1988-89 campaign.
During that latter season, Lemieux nearly became the second player in NHL history to record a 200-point season when he finished with 199 in 76 games.
