Dengue Test Results Took One to Two Months in the Virgin Islands Until a Local Lab Began Testing

During the U.S. Virgin Islands' first dengue outbreak in about a decade, doctors waited one to two months for lab results because no local testing existed and every sample had to be shipped off the islands. The finding comes from a report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention published Oct. 15 in the Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

Once the territory began running dengue tests at its own public health laboratory in October 2024, results came back in less than a week. The outbreak, which ran from January 2024 to June 2025, included 263 confirmed cases and the territory's first confirmed dengue-related death since 2005.

A newly published federal investigation has documented 263 confirmed dengue cases, 15 hospitalizations and the U.S. Virgin Islands' first confirmed dengue-associated death since 2005 during an outbreak that stretched from January 2024 through June 2025. The report also reveals that the territory initially lacked local dengue diagnostic testing, forcing patient samples to be sent off-island and resulting in laboratory turnaround times of one to two months.

The findings were published Thursday by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in its Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report. The investigation, conducted with the V.I. Department of Health, examined the territory's first dengue outbreak since 2012–2013 and documented shortcomings in testing and clinical preparedness that health officials subsequently moved to address.
