Three Bruins Earn AP Midseason First-Team All-America Honors

UCLA lead the nation with its three selections to the AP Midseason All-America First Team.

The No. 12 UCLA football team led the nation with three student-athletes named to the Associated Press Midseason All-America First Team, the AP announced Thursday. The Bruins’ selections were all-purpose player Wayne Knight, defensive back Ta’Shawn James and linebacker Sammy Omosigho.

UCLA accounted for three of the Big Ten Conference’s seven first-team selections. The last time three Bruins earned AP All-America honors in the same season was 2012.

RB Wayne KnightKnight has been one of the country’s most productive players, leading the FBS in points per game (13.2) and ranking third in both rushing touchdowns (10) and all-purpose yards per game (157.8). The Smyrna, Del., native has rushed for at least one touchdown in each of UCLA’s first five games, becoming the first Bruin to accomplish that feat since Maurice Jones-Drew in 2005. He has scored multiple touchdowns in four of those contests, opening the season with consecutive games in which he matched his career high of three rushing touchdowns.

Bob Chesney explains the difference between goals and standards at UCLA, and details "exposed or revealed" message to UCLA depth chart

Bob Chesney has #12 UCLA sitting at 5-0 in his first season in Westwood and one of the most impressive surprises in college football

However, while fans of college football have admired the quick success, he isn't framing that undefeated start as a goal checked off.

Appearing on The Triple Option podcast this week, Chesney drew a clean line between a few words coaches often use interchangeably – goals, standards, and process.

"Goals are for people that want to win once," Chesney said. "Process and standards are for people that want to win longterm."

He made the point during a conversation about injuries, and UCLA is living that reality right now. Senior quarterback Nico Iamaleava left Saturday's game at Oregon after taking a hit late in the second quarter, and reports since have shared that he's likely out for the remainder of the season.
