The College Football Playoff and ESPN have reached an informal agreement on a deal that would give the network the rights to a 24-team postseason tournament starting in 2027, a person briefed on the deal told The Athletic on Friday. The person confirmed ESPN’s initial report that the network would pay an additional $345 million annually for the new games in an expanded tournament.
The person spoke on condition of anonymity because nothing had been signed and details were still being worked out. A formal announcement was not expected soon, and the CFP’s presidential oversight board still required final approval of any deal. But the negotiations moved forward as college football leaders attempted to double the size of the Playoff field.
