Trudy forecast to near Mexico's Pacific coast as major hurricane through the weekend
MEXICO CITY, Oct 16 (Reuters) – Hurricane Trudy weakened on Friday but could regain strength in the coming hours, meteorologists warned, as the storm approached Mexico's western coast, packing winds of up to 140 km per hour (85 mph).
Further strengthening is forecast before Trudy nears Jalisco and Colima states in central-western Mexico late on Saturday as a life-threatening major hurricane, Mexican authorities and the US-based National Hurricane Center said.
The center of Trudy will approach the coast of southwestern and west-central Mexico on Saturday and pass near the coast Saturday night into Sunday, the NHC said in its latest advisory.
"Trudy will remain a dangerous hurricane as it moves near Mexico's central-western coast this weekend, bringing strong winds, rough seas, and torrential rain," said private forecaster AccuWeather.
Hurricane Trudy drenching Mexico; Guam braces for another typhoon
The Atlantic has returned to its deep El Niño slumber after last week’s strike from Hurricane Isaias on the Florida Panhandle, with only hints of a potential system off the Carolinas a week or more from now, but the Pacific remains red-hot and packed with tropical cyclone activity. The action is particularly intense in the eastern Pacific, which has already set a record for the busiest season on record: as of Thursday, October 15, the 2026 tally of accumulated cyclone energy (ACE) of 331 for the eastern Pacific (east of the International Date Line) has surpassed the previous full-season ACE record of 318 set in 2018.
