EXPLAINED: Ukraine’s Military, Elon Musk’s Starlink Slowdown
In brief: Starlink (Elon Musk) limited terminals above ~160 kph, crippling Ukraine’s key mid-range strike drones (hitting Russian logistics) and fast interceptor drones vs. jet-powered Russian ones. Ground ops and short-range FPV drones remain largely unaffected; Starlink is still vital for military data.
The US aerospace giant Starlink and its CEO Elon Musk on Tuesday tweaked parameters and weakened the capability of its worldwide satellite communications system, which is the Ukrainian military’s most important data transfer platform. Kyiv Post took a look at the implications.
The Ukrainian Armed Forces (AFU) operate about 50,000 “official” Starlink terminals purchased by its own government or allies, with Poland probably being the biggest contributor, with a reported 29,000 terminals acquired.
Elon Musk says Trump is 'ultimately' responsible for any curbs on Ukraine's Starshield systems
SpaceX founder and CEO Elon Musk said Wednesday that the U.S. government and President Donald Trump are responsible for any curbs on Ukraine's military-grade Starlink network.
Writing on X, Musk said that "Starshield systems are owned and controlled by the U.S. government. Any limits on speed or usage are decided by the US military and ultimately POTUS."
Ukraine had accused SpaceX of imposing new restrictions on the Starshield internet service without warning, leading to disruptions to Ukrainian military operations amid fresh Russian strikes on its energy infrastructure.
On Wednesday, Serhii Beskrestnov, an advisor to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on defense technology, said SpaceX had implemented a speed limit on Starlink terminals in motion, without notifying the country's defense forces.
