PG&E could shut off power to nearly 90,000 California homes and businesses as fire danger grows
Nearly 90,000 Pacific Gas and Electric Co. customers across California could lose power this week as the utility expanded its outage plans to prevent wildfire starts. Outages are possible from Wednesday night through Saturday morning amid dry, hot and windy conditions, though they wouldn't necessarily cover the full timeframe.
PG&E on Wednesday morning said it had sent notifications to an additional 25,000 customers across California about the planned power shutoffs, including 4,700 customers in Alameda County, and 1,600 in Contra Costa County. PG&E's map shows potential shutoff zones concentrated in the Berkeley and Oakland hills. While the area stretches down to UC Berkeley, a university spokesperson told the Chronicle that the core campus would not be part of the shutoffs, and impacts would be minimal.
