NBA Eastern Conference Season Preview
Opening night is Oct. 20, and the East's injury report reads very differently from the West's. The defending champion Knicks and the Pistons have no notable injuries at all, while Philadelphia is managing a 41-year-old superstar and Indiana is welcoming back its franchise point guard after a lost season.
Below are six injury situations worth knowing out East, followed by a team-by-team rundown of everyone else on the report.
James is entering a record 24th season on a new team, and his body is now part of the storyline. ESPN's Dave McMenamin reported on Oct. 5 that James has chronic arthritis in his left foot and is still monitoring the lower back that caused a sciatica flare-up and cost him the first month of last season with the Lakers. His days now start around 7:45 a.m. with trainer Mike Mancias, working on stretching, activation and targeted treatment before practice, and he sat out the preseason opener against the Knicks as a healthy inactive. The good news for Philadelphia is that he still produced 20.9 points, 6.1 rebounds and 7.2 assists in 60 games last season, and he no longer has to carry an offense. Alongside Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and Jaylen Brown, James can be managed through back-to-backs and saved for the spring.
