Celtics rookies earn praise from teammates after debuts
Chris Cenac Jr. and Dillon Mitchell both demonstrated their natural athleticism and relentless motor in the Celtics preseason opener — and their more veteran teammates took notice.
BOSTON — Both of the Celtics rookies impressed in their preseason debuts against the Cleveland Cavaliers on Thursday night.
Chris Cenac Jr., who was the 27th overall pick, recorded 7 points, 8 rebounds (4 offensive), 4 blocks, and an assist in 24 minutes. Dillon Mitchell, who was the 40th overall pick, recorded 10 points, 9 rebounds (5 offensive), 4 assists, and 2 steals in 28 minutes.
Celtics assistant coach DJ MacLeay, who served as the head coach for the second half of Thursday’s game, said the duo of youngsters stood out to him most in the preseason opener.
Donovan Mitchell News: Scores 11 points in limited action
Mitchell recorded 11 points (4-8 FG, 0-1 3Pt, 3-3 FT) and three assists across 17 minutes in Thursday's 124-113 preseason loss to the Celtics.
Mitchell played exclusively in the first half as Cleveland distributed minutes evenly among its starters, with all five logging exactly 17 minutes. With Cleveland prioritizing rotation evaluation during the preseason, Mitchell's modest workload shouldn't raise concerns about his regular-season offensive role. He should remain one of the team's go-to options ahead of the regular-season opener against the 76ers on Thursday, Oct. 22.
