Matisse Thybulle Knows Guarding Luka Doncic & Austin Reaves In Practice Will Make Him Better
Training camp kicked off this week for the Los Angeles Lakers and the intensity has clearly been high. With two starting spots on the line, players are battling hard and one of them has been Matisse Thybulle.
Austin Reaves and Luka Doncic have made it clear that they do not enjoy having Thybulle guard them, and the same could be said for the other way around. While Thybulle isn’t having fun, he knows that it will better him as a defender in the long run getting to guard those guys in practice.
“I mean, you have to work so hard, they’re so talented,” Thybulle said of guarding the Lakers stars. “I think for me, it’s great because getting to play against two of the best offensive players in the NBA every day just primes you, I think primes all of us. But me specifically, it primes you for what to expect and it’s a big thing when you’re growing up that practice should be harder than the games. I think in the NBA, it’s a little different because you just have to pace yourself for such a long season. But guarding Luka and AR, practice is definitely going to be harder than the games.”

Two days into Lakers training camp, while integrating nine new players during yet another physical practice session, Austin Reaves has been impressed with just how good this Lakers group can be.
As he stood before the media after practice Wednesday, Reaves was asked if he saw the makings of a championship team.
Reaves has such high hopes because of the defensive intensity the Lakers have displayed in camp.
It starts with center Walker Kessler, the team’s new rim-protecting 7-foot-2 center.

Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves are expected to be the leaders of the Lakers’ offense this season, and an aggressive group of wing defenders is getting them ready for that role, Benjamin Royer of The Orange County Register writes in a subscriber-only story. “They all annoy the hell out of me,” Reaves said of the group, led by offseason addition Matisse Thybulle, and Thybulle expressed similar respect for the team’s two stars.
“You have to work sooooo hard,” he said. “They’re so talented. … I think for me it’s great because getting to play against two of the best offensive players in the NBA every day just primes you for – I think it primes all of us, but me specifically – just primes you for what to expect.”
