Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin announces this will be his last NHL season
This season will be Alex Ovechkin’s last in the NHL.
The 41-year-old future Hall of Famer first made the announcement to his Washington Capitals teammates on Monday.
“It’s sad, but it is what it is,” Ovechkin said in his locker room address. “It’s hard, but let’s enjoy it and let’s do some special things this year.”
“We have an unbelievable team this year,” he added. “Let’s make the playoffs, let’s have fun and enjoy the moment because times fly.”
Ovechkin signed a one-year deal worth up to $9 million in July to return for a 22nd NHL season. His contract carries a cap hit of $4.25 million, but he will earn additional $4.75 million bonus if he appears in 10 games. He has one assist through two games so far.
Lynden Lakovic on his first pro point for Hershey, his welcome-to-the-NHL moment with Alex Ovechkin, and being pushed by Gavin McKenna
HERSHEY, PA — Lynden Lakovic’s first professional game was one to remember, even though the Hershey Bears fell to the Charlotte Checkers 5-2 in their home opener.
Starting on the second line with Bogdan Trineyev and Theodor Niederbach, Lakovic showed off his blazing speed, nearly scoring on two different breakaways, but Checkers goaltender Cooper Black foiled them both. Lakovic’s first attempt in period 1 squeaked through Black’s body, but slid just short of the goal line. He then wrote his name on Hershey’s scoresheet for the first time shortly after his second attempt was stopped.
After gathering the puck above the circles, Lakovic curled back to the sideboards and banked a back-pass to Jacob MacDonald at the point. The veteran AHL rearguard then fired a quick shot that found the back of the net, tying the game 2-2 with 50.4 seconds remaining in the second period and giving Lakovic his milestone first career AHL point on a primary assist.

Alex Ovechkin played the fewest minutes of his career in Capitals’ season-opening win over Hurricanes
Alex Ovechkin finished the Washington Capitals‘ 2026-27 season opener with an unusual number next to his name.
The Capitals captain played just 12:46 of ice time in Washington’s 5-2 win over the Carolina Hurricanes on Friday night, the lowest ice time of his NHL career in a game he completed without being injured or ejected. However, while that fact may startle some, there’s plenty of context behind why Ovechkin didn’t jump over the boards more.
First, Ovechkin, who turned 41 last month, did not play a single preseason game after dealing with a lower-body injury during training camp. He was available for Washington’s regular-season opener but had already acknowledged that missing the preseason could make the first few games more challenging.
