De Minaur fights into quarterfinals in China

Alex de Minaur beat French world number 50 Quentin Halys in a 2-hour 47-minute, three-set epic at the China Open.

Halys served for the match at 5-3 in the second set, before de Minaur rallied to win 3-6, 7-6 (5), 7-5.

De Minaur will play Andrey Rublev, currently ranked number 20 in the world, in the quarterfinal.

Alex de Minaur has been pushed to the limit, before breaking the resistance of French qualifier Quentin Halys and advancing to his second consecutive China Open quarterfinal.

The Australian, who has had a seesawing second half of the year, lost the first set in Beijing on Saturday, before grinding his way back into the match.

De Minaur saves match point to beat Halys in China

The Australian was a set down to the French qualifier, and was staring down the barrel of defeat when Halys served for the match at 5-3 in the second, but De Minaur clawed his way to a tiebreak, which he won 7-5 to set up a decider.

That third set was no easier, but De Minaur earned a break at 5-5 that would prove crucial before seeing out the match in 2 hours 47 minutes.
