Deshaun Watson seeks redemption without genuine remorse

Thursday night’s broadcast of Steelers-Browns on Prime Video featured plenty of tiptoeing around the elephant that Deshaun Watson dragged into the room with his own actions. From the sit-down interview with Taylor Rooks to the periodic vague references from Al Michaels and Kirk Herbstreit to Watson’s past issues, there was never a direct mention of the self-created adversity Watson has experienced since 2021.

It meshes with Watson’s broader approach to the situation. He has never shown true, consistent remorse for more than 25 civil lawsuits alleging sexual misconduct during massage therapy sessions. Although a grand jury declined to indict him in any of the cases that landed in the criminal system, the NFL’s in-house judicial process resulted in an 11-game suspension under the Personal Conduct Policy.

Al Michaels glosses over Deshaun Watson's two dozen sexual misconduct lawsuits, calls them a 'thing'

Famed sports agent Leigh Steinberg talks to OutKick about the fallout of the Cleveland Browns' contract with Deshaun Watson.

The Deshaun Watson story isn't fully written because this Cleveland Browns season isn't over and neither is his career. But Amazon Prime play-by-play announcer Al Michaels figures he can tell the tale without mentioning the most important and disgusting parts: The sexual misconduct and abuse allegations, and the dozen lawsuits Watson settled afterward to keep his career afloat.

The Browns and the Pittsburgh Steelers were on Thursday Night Football this week and that, of course, put Watson in the spotlight.

Taylor Rooks presses Deshaun Watson on Browns fans skepticism of him

Deshaun Watson isn’t exactly the apple of Cleveland’s eye.

The Cleveland Browns acquired the then-star quarterback of the Houston Texans in March 2022. Watson signed an unprecedented $230 million, fully guaranteed contract. But before playing a game for the Browns, he served an 11-game suspension stemming from two dozen sexual assault misconduct allegations.

By June 2022, 20 of 24 lawsuits had been settled, and all remaining lawsuits were resolved this February.

Watson played just 19 games from 2022 to 2024 due to injuries, including a twice torn Achilles tendon. When he played, his performance left much to be desired.

After all that, Browns fans have had a palpable disdain for Watson, who remained defensive toward fans and the media to start this NFL season.
