What’s in your cat’s food? New investigation finds lead and other toxins
Nearly all tested cat foods contain toxic plastic contaminants, the herbicide glyphosate and heavy metals such as lead, mercury and arsenic, according to a new investigation provided exclusively to CNN.
âMost cats eat the same foods nearly every day, with little variation,â said report author Molly Hamilton, executive director of the Clean Label Project, a Colorado nonprofit that tests consumer products for contaminants and certifies those meeting its standards.
âThe contaminants are an ongoing exposure that may accumulate in catsâ bodies over their lifetimes,â Hamilton said. âFor example, chronic kidney disease is among the most common causes of death in older cats â the kidneys play a major role in filtering heavy metals.â
Investigation Finds Heavy Metals In Nearly All Cat Food
An investigation conducted by the Clean Label Project detected heavy metals in almost all brands and varieties of cat food on the market.
Top-selling options, including wet, dry, air-dried and freeze-dried foods, were tested for more than 120 contaminants.
The testing covered toxins such as herbicides, lead, mercury and arsenic.
Dry food was found to contain three times the amount of lead detected in wet or air-dried products.
Fish-based cat products also had much higher levels of mercury, according to the report.
The Clean Label Project advises cat owners to vary their pet’s diets, examine ingredient lists and watch out for excessive filler ingredients.
