Fresh snow hits Anchorage as September comes to a close

ANCHORAGE, Alaska (KTUU) – Snowfall arrived in Anchorage with a vigor Wednesday, with higher elevations on the hillside seeing fresh powder while the majority of the Anchorage Bowl continued to get a cold rain.

Rounds of rain and mixed precipitation are ahead for Southcentral, with another day of showers in store for Southeast Alaska. Arctic air continues to shift inland, bringing cooler temperatures to the state each passing day and the sight of wintery weather in high elevations.

Throughout your Wednesday, showers will sweep through Anchorage, the Mat-Su and locations to the east of the Kenai Peninsula. Anchorage rain totals are expected to run high, with roughly 0.4–0.8 inches of rain in the forecast for your Wednesday. Higher elevations, including mountain ranges and even Anchorage Hillside and Eagle River, will likely get a trace of snowfall and mixed precipitation with cooler temperatures in store through the rest of the week. Highs will drop into the 40s across Southcentral, with Anchorage likely to see the first official freeze of the season by the end of the week.

Map Shows Earliest Snow Dates in US as 11 Inches to Hit Alaska

A winter weather advisory warning of up to 11 inches of snow has been issued in Alaska, while frost and freeze alerts have been issued in four other states.

The advisory was issued roughly a week after the official start of fall. Much of the United States is still experiencing warm temperatures, and a heat advisory is in place across California, making it feel as though winter is still far off.

However, data from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) reveals that many U.S. states have seen the first measurable snowfall of the season as early as September or October, meaning those first flakes are possible in the coming days and weeks.
