Phillies make minor tweak to starting rotation ahead of final weekend of the season
PHILADELPHIA – Two Phillies starters, Andrew Painter and Cristopher Sánchez, will pitch on normal rest this week.
The Phillies are moving up the start dates of both Painter and Sánchez after the off day on Monday, pushing back a potential bullpen game that would have been Thursday had the Phillies kept the rotation as is.
Painter will start Thursday’s series finale against Milwaukee. Interim manager Don Mattingly made the announcement before the game.
After the 4-1 defeat against the Brewers, Mattingly said that Sánchez, who last pitched on Sunday in New York, will start Friday’s series opener against the Tampa Bay Rays. It could be an abbreviated start if the Phillies clinch a postseason berth on Thursday.
Phillies may be preparing Andrew Painter for a bullpen role by keeping him on normal rest for his next start
By keeping Painter on turn rather than giving him extra rest, the Phillies could line him up to come out of the bullpen for one inning this weekend ahead of a potential relief role in the playoffs.
Don Mattingly didnât want to tempt fate. So, in revealing that Andrew Painter will start Thursday night instead of Friday, he explained that the Phillies merely prefer to keep the rookie on regular rest.
By keeping Painter on turn rather than giving him extra rest â as they did last week in New York against the Mets â the Phillies could line him up to come out of the bullpen for one inning over the weekend in lieu of a side session in preparation for a potential relief role in the postseason.

Phillies Reveal Lineup For Must-Win Game vs Rays
September hasn't been kind to the Philadelphia Phillies, and now the team is fighting for their playoff lives with two games remaining in the regular season.
Philadelphia's recent losing streak, combined with a strong finish from the Arizona Diamondbacks now has the Phillies in danger of missing the playoffs entirely. Entering Saturday, the Phillies are just one game ahead of Arizona for the final wild-card spot in the National League.
And to make matters worse for Philadelphia, the Diamondbacks own the tiebreaker. This means that the Phillies can't finish with the same record as Arizona; otherwise, they will be on the outside looking in for the postseason.
