Hungary’s first smart supermarket opens: say goodbye to closing time

Hungary’s smart retail revolution has reached supermarket scale, with Szeged opening what is being presented as the country’s first staffless supermarket. The new Coop Szeged store on Temesvári Boulevard operates as a conventional shop during staffed hours before switching to an automated mode, allowing registered customers to shop without cashiers or sales assistants.

The 470-square-metre store stocks more than 6,000 products, meaning customers can do a full grocery shop rather than simply pick up a handful of items from vending machines. Outside normal opening hours, customers registered with the 247 Shop app can enter using a QR code. They select their goods from the shelves and pay by bank card at a self-service checkout, writes 24.hu.

List: 164 Auchan supermarkets set to become Intermarché or Netto

Auchan is beginning the next stage of the transformation of its French supermarket network in October, with 164 stores set to operate under the Intermarché or Netto banners.

The changes will begin on October 1 and continue in stages until May 2027.

However, the supermarkets will not be sold to Intermarché. Instead, they will be transferred to A+Super, a new legal entity owned by Auchan Retail France, and operated as franchises under the Intermarché or Netto banner.

The project was approved by France's competition authority in July. At that stage, the authority said 167 Auchan stores would operate in this way.

Auchan later said that the final number had been reduced to 164.

Auchan Completes French Supermarket Overhaul

Auchan Retail has completed the strategic transformation of its French supermarket network, entering exclusive negotiations to sell 17 stores to peer Lidl as part of an operational overhaul launched in November 2025.

The major restructuring secures a pathway for all the 266 integrated stores involved, ensuring zero store closures and protecting jobs across the network.

To restore long-term profitability and market competitiveness to its supermarket format, Auchan is deploying three strategic levers alongside the Lidl negotiations.

Effective from 1 October 2026, 164 supermarkets will transition to a new autonomous legal entity, A+Super, owned by Auchan Retail France.

These locations will operate as franchises under the Intermarché or Netto banners, leveraging the Groupement Mousquetaires supply chain and business model.
