The Cook Islands’ Long Journey Back to Home Soil
For anyone born in the Cook Islands after 1998, watching the menâs national football team on home soil hasnât been possible.
Players have come through the domestic game and represented their country overseas without ever experiencing a senior international in front of their own community.
But on 26 September, 2026, that changed. The Cook Islands welcomed Tahiti to Rarotonga for their first senior menâs home match in 28 years. Tahiti won 3â1. Regardless of the result, this gave local supporters an opportunity to watch a side that has spent almost three decades playing elsewhere.
The length of that absence becomes easier to understand when you look at the countryâs geography. Its 15 islands are scattered across 2.2 million square kilometres of Pacific Ocean. Self-governing in free association with New Zealand since 1965, the Cook Islands maintains close connections with a substantial community overseas.
