Trump Accounts will auto-enroll children, potentially adding 60 million accounts: Treasury

The Department of the Treasury said Trump Accounts will begin auto-enrolling millions of children as early as Oct. 1, according to temporary regulations published Tuesday.

The change could increase the number of children enrolled in Trump Accounts in 2026 by more than 60 million, the guidance said. In future years, the regulations could boost enrollment by about 2 million accounts a year.

So far, 7 million to 8 million American children have been signed up for Trump Accounts, and "we anticipate within a month we will have 70 million because we will go to auto-enroll," Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said Sept. 15 at a hearing held by the House Financial Services Committee.

60 Million Kids to Get Trump Accounts Automatically

The Treasury Department will automatically create Trump Accounts for more than 60 million children who don't have one, beginning on or about Oct. 1, under rules released Tuesday that end the requirement for parents or guardians to sign up.

The temporary rules, issued with the Internal Revenue Service and set for publication Wednesday in the Federal Register, cover children under 18 who have a Social Security number. Treasury said it will keep enrolling eligible children periodically, adding about 2 million accounts a year as newborns arrive.

The program's official website declares, "The American Dream starts now" and promotes "long-term financial security for millions of kids" through the official Trump Accounts application on the Apple and Google app stores.
