Angels had worst season in franchise history, but future is bright in Anaheim
Despite being eliminated from postseason contention weeks ago, the Los Angeles Angels did have something to play for down the final stretch of the regular season.
The Angels, one of the worst franchises in the big leagues over the last 15 years, somehow were the only team in MLB history to never lose 100 games in a season. They fought admirably to avoid that fate, but their 7-3 loss to the Seattle Mariners in their final game of 2026 ultimately sealed it.
But looking ahead to the offseason, there's a real sense that brighter days are ahead in Anaheim.
After the trade deadline, the pitching rotation found itself posting a collective 2.51 ERA in the month of August, the lowest among starting pitchers in franchise history since April 1982. Reid Detmers was spectacular and looked like the starter he's believed he could be since making his debut in 2021. Rookie Walbert Ureña emerged as another reliable arm, and finished the year with a 2.57 ERA and 1.227 WHIP. The trend of strong pitching continued into September, and the Angels are hoping that can carry over into 2027.

WEST SACRAMENTO — With five games left in the regular season, the Angels have some extra motivation to finish strong, as they’re trying to avoid losing 100 games for the first time in franchise history.
The Angels, who are 60-97 after their loss against the Athletics on Tuesday, need to win three games to avoid 100 losses. They’re the only MLB club to never top the century mark in losses and would love to keep it that way.

When Will the Angels Be Competitive Again?
Unless the Los Angeles Angels win their final six games and somehow figure out how to get Major League Baseball to overturn the results of 15 others, the club will finish below the .500 mark for the 11th consecutive season. This postseason will mark the 12th in a row to not feature any Halos, and it has been 17 years since the last time they won a game in the playoffs. The Arte Moreno era is ending, with Los Angeles Rams owner Stan Kroenke taking over the helm. And while Kroenke has a mixed record as an owner, a mixed record would qualify as progress after Moreno. New ownership tends to represent a new beginning for a team, setting up an important question: Can the Angels return to playing October baseball in the near future? After all, while the team doesn’t have the same revenue as the Dodgers, it’s still located in the second-most-populous metropolitan area in the United States; theoretically, they have the resources to speed up the process.
