Padres line up ace King to start regular-season finale — just in case
SAN DIEGO — The Padres have won 13 of 14 and have surged into a tie for the top Wild Card spot in the National League. They’ve built five games of cushion on Arizona with six games to play. Their magic number to clinch a playoff spot is down to two.
Ace Michael King will move up in the rotation to start Tuesday’s series opener against the Dodgers in Los Angeles, manager Craig Stammen announced on Sunday after the Padres completed a sweep with a 7-3 victory over the Marlins at Petco Park.
That would line King up to start the regular-season finale against Arizona on normal rest in the event the Padres haven’t yet punched their postseason ticket. (Even though King is jumping ahead of Robbie Ray in the rotation, he will be pitching on normal rest Tuesday because of Monday’s off-day. Ray, meanwhile, has been pushed to Wednesday.)

The San Diego Padres are looking to even their series with the Los Angeles Dodgers on Wednesday and get one step closer to clinching a spot in the 2026 postseason.
The Padres dropped Tuesday's series opener, 7-0, as starting pitcher Michael King was tagged for five runs in four innings in his worst start since May and the team's offense was shut down from a Dodgers bullpen game.
The Padres weren't able to get closer to a postseason berth, as the Arizona Diamondbacks won their game. The Padres' Magic Number remains at 2.
“It's just one game,” manager Craig Stammen said after the team's loss. “We've got five more ahead of us. [Wednesday], everything starts anew.”
