Dollar General CEO says consumers making $100,000 a year don’t feel like high-income shoppers anymore as high gas prices and inflation reshape habits

A six-figure annual salary used to be a milestone for career success and financial security, but it isn't what it used to be.

The era of elevated inflation that began during the COVID pandemic has eroded the value of $100,000 to the point that Americans earning that much are hunting for bargains like everyone else.

Walmart has previously noted that more affluent customers are shopping at the discount chain. And now they are patronizing deep discounters like dollar stores.

At the Goldman Sachs Global Consumer and Retail Conference on Tuesday, Dollar General CEO Todd Vasos said core customers, whom he defined as those making less than $45,000 a year, change their shopping behavior when gas prices hit $4 a gallon.

US High Earners Shift Spending Habits as Inflation Persists

Persistent inflation and elevated fuel costs are altering consumer behaviors in the United States, forcing Americans earning $100,000 or more annually to seek out bargains and adopt shopping habits similar to lower-income households.

Addressing the Goldman Sachs Global Consumer and Retail Conference, Dollar General CEO Todd Vasos highlighted that sustained economic pressure has eroded the purchasing power of middle- to upper-middle-income earners, prompting higher visitation to discount chains.

"But the interesting thing with this economy, because of the other sustained headwinds of inflation over the years that have passed, even that middle to upper middle is acting more like a lower-income shopper these days," said Todd Vasos, CEO of Dollar General.

In the US, shoppers earning $100,000 or more are looking for discounts — Fortune

In the United States, people with annual incomes of $100,000 or more are increasingly looking for bargains and behaving like lower-income shoppers due to prolonged inflation and rising basic expenses. This was stated by Dollar General CEO Todd Vasos, Fortune reports.

According to Vasos, Dollar General’s main customers are people with annual incomes of less than $45,000. When the price of gasoline reaches $4 per gallon, they are more likely to shop closer to home, visit stores more often, and spend less per visit.

The company’s chief said that people with middle and above-average incomes are displaying similar behavior due to prolonged inflationary pressure. According to him, an increasing number of shoppers earning $100,000 or more a year do not consider themselves affluent because of rising expenses.
