From "vibe coding" to "trash panda," the internet has officially talked its way into the dictionary.

Merriam-Webster has added 1,400 new words and definitions to its online catalog, giving a digital-age "glow-up" to the language and official recognition to an internet-fueled mix that also includes "looksmaxxing," "parasocial" and "Rickroll."

US dictionary adds 1,400 words, including neckbeard, trash panda and cuffing season

Merriam-Webster, America's oldest dictionary publisher, has added 1,400 new words, including glow-up, looksmaxxing, meme coin and trash panda – the affectionate nickname for raccoons.

"The new entries reflect words and meanings that have demonstrated widespread use over time, offering a window into the world today," the publisher said in a blog post.

Other newly-added words are culinary-inspired, including superfood (foods rich in nutrients), bao (a stuffed bread bun popular in Asia), and cake pop (cake and icing on a lollipop stick).

Ahead of autumn, cuffing season has also been added, referring to the time of year when single people seek a romantic partner with whom to spend the cold months.

Merriam-Webster may be the oldest dictionary publisher in America, dating back to 1843, but that doesn’t mean its pages are stuck in the past. It routinely adds new words and definitions to its catalog of the English language, which serves as an ever-evolving record of how people express themselves. 

“A dictionary isn’t an idea museum; it’s a user’s manual for communication,” according to Merriam-Webster.
