Gerrit Graham, Actor in ‘Phantom of the Paradise,’ Screenwriter and Grateful Dead Collaborator, Dies at 77
Gerrit Graham, an actor, screenwriter and songwriter who co-wrote a song for The Grateful Dead, died on Tuesday in Rhinebeck, N.Y. He was 77. He suffered from lung disease, among other ailments.
Graham began his career starring alongside Robert De Niro in early Brian de Palma films “Hi Mom!” and “Greetings,” later appearing in films such as “Demon Seed,” “Pretty Baby,” “Child’s Play 2” and “National Lampoon’s Class Reunion.” Skilled in impressions and accents, Graham also appeared in episodes of “Seinfeld,” “Laverne and Shirley” and “The Wonder Years,” and on both “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine” and “Star Trek: Voyager.”

Graham also portrayed an aspiring country singer in Paul Bartel’s Cannonball! (1976); a computer nerd opposite Julie Christie in Demon Seed (1977); the abusive boyfriend of Susan Sarandon’s character in Louis Malle’s Pretty Baby (1978); one of the scheming salesmen in Robert Zemeckis’ Used Cars (1980); and the foster father of Alex Vincent’s Andy Barkley in Child’s Play 2 (1990).

Gerrit Graham, an easily recognizable “That Guy” character actor from film and TV, as well as a screenwriter and Grateful Dead collaborator, has died. Perhaps best known as the hulking rockstar Beef from Brian De Palma’s The Phantom Of The Paradise, Graham spent four decades on screen, appearing in Pretty Baby, Seinfeld, Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Voyager, and Used Cars. Per Variety, he died Tuesday after suffering from lung disease and other ailments. He was 77.
Born November 27, 1949, in New York City, Graham grew up in the Midwest before his family settled in Chicago. He got his start on stage as an eight-year-old in a production of Winnie The Pooh but returned to the East Coast for school at Columbia University. There, he became manager of the Columbia Players and met director Brian De Palma, who cast the actor in his early features, Greetings, Home Movies, and Hi, Mom!. He’d never finish the degree.
