Powerful magnitude 6.5 earthquake strikes offshore of southwest Alaska along the Pacific Ring of Fire

NIKOLSKI, Alaska – A strong magnitude 6.5 earthquake struck near a remote stretch of the Aleutian Islands early Monday morning, along the volatile stretch of the Pacific Ring of Fire.

The U.S. Geological Survey said that the earthquake struck at 5:19 a.m. local time, about 101 miles west-southwest of Nikolski, Alaska, at a depth of about 71 miles. 

So far, the USGS has noted that only three individuals reported feeling the faint shaking, which could be largely due to the depth of the quake along with the remoteness of the location. 

Magnitude 6.5 earthquake hits southwest Alaska

A significant earthquake struck in Alaska's Aleutian Islands on the morning of Sept. 17, the United States Geological Survey reported.

The quake measured a preliminary magnitude 6.5, the USGS said, with the epicenter located about 100 miles west of Nikolski on Umnak Island.

It was not immediately clear whether the quake caused any injuries or damage. There is no immediate threat of a tsunami, per the National Tsunami Warning Center.
