The Indian Council of Medical Research has confirmed that the H1N1 strain currently circulating in the country is not a new one, it remains part of the H1N1 pdm09 family that has been in circulation globally since the 2009 pandemic, and there is no cause for panic. But ICMR scientists have also been clear on who remains vulnerable: young children, the elderly, and those with underlying medical conditions face a significantly higher risk of complications.
The numbers back this up. Delhi has recorded 2,602 influenza cases so far this year, with H1N1 accounting for more than two thirds of them, and it has now overtaken H3N2 as the dominant subtype in the capital. Alongside this, Delhi NCR is also seeing dengue and chikungunya cases, with active clusters spreading through schools.

H1N1 influenza can be difficult for anyone to deal with, but for older adults, a swine flu infection can sometimes become much more serious. “H1N1 influenza, a subtype of influenza A virus, is an infectious viral illness that causes both upper and, in some cases, lower respiratory tract infections in its host,” states the National Institutes of Health (NIH). People aged 65 and above are considered a high-risk group for influenza complications, particularly when they already have underlying health conditions.
