Just over two months out from Election Day, a new Texas poll found three notable results: the candidates remain statistically tied in the U.S. Senate race, Republicans are pulling ahead in the governor's race, and Texans are united in their disdain for data centers.
A new University of Texas/Texas Politics Project poll, published Aug. 25, finds 42% of Texas voters preferring Democrat state Rep. James Talarico and 39% planning to vote for Republican state Attorney General Ken Paxton in the hotly contested U.S. Senate race in Texas.
Meanwhile, Republican Gov. Greg Abbott leads his Democratic challenger, state Rep. Gina Hinojosa, 45% to 40%.

AUSTIN, Texas – State Rep. James Talarico holds a narrow lead over Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton in the closely watched U.S. Senate race, according to a new Texas Politics Project poll that also found Democrats reporting greater enthusiasm for voting.
The latest polling from the Texas Politics Project shows Talarico with a 3-point lead over Paxton, 42%-39%. The poll also shows Libertarian candidate Ted Brown with the support of 3% of those polled, while 14% said they haven't thought about it enough to form an opinion.

How James Talarico Polls Compare to Beto O’Rourke in 2018
U.S. Senate candidate James Talarico, a Texas Democrat, is polling more strongly against Republican Ken Paxton than Beto O’Rourke generally did before his narrow 2018 loss to Republican Senator Ted Cruz.
The comparison matters because O’Rourke came within 2.6 points of Cruz despite trailing in nearly every late survey, while Talarico has led several recent polls.
Texas voters will decide whether those early advantages represent a Democratic breakthrough in the November midterms or another competitive race that ultimately returns a Republican senator.
