There's a widespread assumption that parity is the greatest achievement any sports league can have. Nobody wants to see elite teams dominate, year in and year out, the thinking goes.
This appreciation for parity is frequently referenced as one of the explanations for the NFL's total and complete ratings domination. Though this parity is curiously never impacted by the fact that Patrick Mahomes or Tom Brady has won the Super Bowl in seven of the last 12 years, despite Brady having retired three years ago.

The final full week of August begins with one MLB wild-card race deadlocked at the playoff cut line and another featuring several contenders still within striking distance.
In the American League, the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox have created breathing room atop the wild-card standings. The final spot is far less secure: The Cleveland Guardians and Texas Rangers enter Monday, Aug. 24, with identical 65-66 records, leaving the projected postseason field vulnerable to changing with virtually every result.
The National League race has more separation, but hardly feels settled. The Chicago Cubs, Philadelphia Phillies and San Diego Padres currently occupy the three wild-card positions. The Arizona Diamondbacks, however, begin the week only two games behind San Diego, with the Miami Marlins and St. Louis Cardinals still trying to remain within reach.

Supercomputer predicts the final MLB standings with major Wild Card shakeup
It's late August, so the MLB standings are bound to change a bit between now and late September. That's doubly true for the Wild Card race in both leagues. No team is truly out of it, and that includes the lowly Mets, who fell to the bottom of the National League and sold off most of their assets at the trade deadline, and the Detroit Tigers, which did the same by dealing Tarik Skubal to the Los Angeles Dodgers. This season more than any, the trade deadline was not telling of any MLB team's short-term plans.
Predictions are the name of the game in this business. I've made far too many that I'm not proud of, and I'm supposed to be an expert. Thankfully, we have Opta to help us out.
