Widow of fisherman who was killed in Alaska pleads for entry to U.S. to attend cremation
WASHINGTON STATE — The family of a man who was killed in an accident on a fishing vessel in Alaska last month is hoping for a last-minute opportunity to bring his wife to Washington state to see him before his remains are cremated.
According to Alaska State Troopers, Vincent Short, 36, of Jefferson County, died from a fall on board a boat near Akutan, Alaska on July 30.
In the aftermath of his death, Short's wife, Adriana Gonzalez, quickly applied for an emergency visa to attend the funeral and cremation services in Washington state but was turned down, according to the family's lawyer, James Gooding of Injury At Sea, a firm owned by Seattle-based GLP Attorneys.

It is with broken hearts that we share the passing of our son, Vincent Frank Short, age 36. On July 30, 2026 Vincent died tragically while working aboard the F/V Columbia in Akutan Alaska. There is an ongoing investigation into the circumstances of his death. Vincent was a loyal husband, dedicated father and loving son who always lit up every room with his kind heart, practical jokes and laughter.
Vincent was born on July 5, 1990 in Port Angeles, Washington to Douglas Frank Short and Donna Lynn Short (Churchill). He grew up in Quilcene, Sequim, Chimacum, and Port Ludlow Washington. He moved to Louisiana in 2006 and graduated from Denham Springs High School in 2008. He attended the LSU School of Engineering and then chose a career as a commercial fisherman in 2011. He appreciated the comradery that the fishing community is built upon and how everyone takes care of each other and is considered family.
