The White Lotus star Theo James has taken himself out of the James Bond conversation. The actor, who has long been one of the many names linked to the franchise, is about to star in the second season of Netflix's The Gentleman.
"I'm definitely too old now, for one," the 41-year-old actor told GQ when he was asked about Bond. "But, yeah, that would be an example of a place you could never come back from." The conversation followed comments from James too about his fear of becoming too famous and losing anonymity, as he almost did when he starred in the Divergent series.

Daniel Craig officially left the role of James Bond behind in 2021 when No Time to Die was finally released in theaters, which suffered multiple delays due to the coronavirus pandemic. Even before the movie was released, though, Craig confirmed he would be saying goodbye to the series after his fifth installment, meaning that pundits have been attempting to predict who could step into the iconic shoes of the character for years. With Craig having debuted as 007 in 2006's Casino Royale, it means this is the first attempt at casting the character in more than 20 years.
Part of what makes this process interesting is that, when Craig was cast, he was far from being the most obvious choice for the part. However, with Casino Royale meant to serve as an adventure in the earlier days of Bond's exploits, Craig had more freedom to interpret the character as he saw fit. Previous performers, meanwhile, had the more difficult task of honoring previous portrayals while also putting their own spins on the figure. Understandably, with there being a major 007 void to fill, everyone from industry insiders to average moviegoers have made their predictions about a new James Bond.

Theo James dubs self too old to play James Bond
The hunt for the new James Bond has been going on for so long that you’d be forgiven for thinking that the series’ producers are waiting for some actor to age into the role. Pre-Amazon Bond producer Michael G. Wilson said years ago that the actor who would eventually take the role would be a “thirty-something,” which officially put Tom Holland in the running as of early June. (Of course, he’s probably too associated with Spider-Man to take on the role, but allow us to make the point.) But the length of this process has potentially bumped some people out of the process, like Theo James, who’s 41. Even James thinks so.
