When it comes to backup quarterbacks, I have two profiles that I prefer. The first is the hyper-athlete, along the lines of Malik Willis, because with an extremely shifty, mobile quarterback, at least you can do SOMETHING if he’s forced into the game. Willis is perhaps the best possible version of this quarterback because he also has an absolute cannon, which is why he’s now getting a chance to start.

GREEN BAY – With his in-house competition for the Packers' No. 3 quarterback job gone, the last thing Kyle McCord is about to do is relax.
In fact, the former Eagles draft pick says he's even more motivated to make the most of this chance in Green Bay now that he's getting more practice reps, and likely more game snaps Friday in Denver.
As McCord looks to build on his impressive preseason showing last week in Pittsburgh, he's just focused on staying in the moment and not looking too far ahead.
"One thing about the NFL is you really never know what's going to happen next," McCord said earlier this week following fellow QB Kyron Drones' release, which left him as the Packers' third QB behind Jordan Love and Tyrod Taylor.

Green Bay Packers release rookie quarterback Kyron Drones
GREEN BAY – The Green Bay Packers whittled their quarterback depth chart down to three, releasing undrafted rookie Kyron Drones.
His release leaves Kyle McCord as the frontrunner to be the Packers’ third quarterback, a spot that would likely land him on the practice squad. McCord, a sixth-round pick by the Philadelphia Eagles in 2025, spent all of his rookie season on the Eagles practice squad. He has been with the Packers since signing a reserve/future contract after last season, affording him a head start in learning coach Matt LaFleur’s playbook.
McCord showed potential in directing the Packers offense during the team’s preseason opener at the Pittsburgh Steelers, completing 12-of-16 passes for 102 yards and no interceptions. Though he did not throw a touchdown pass, he led the offense into field-goal position on a drive that started from the Packers’ 25-yard line with 38 seconds left before halftime. McCord completed four straight passes for 35 yards, setting up rookie Trey Smack’s 58-yard field goal.
