Reality isn’t always on offer in “The Hangover” writers and “Bad Moms” filmmakers Jon Lucas and Scott Moore’s latest chaotic comedy. Wild high-jinks unfold at a steady clip, and our stars behave badly, frequently, in front of stone-faced background actors who never bat an eyelash, even when four middle-aged women are staging a full brawl in the middle of a luxury beachside hotel lobby. No one seems bothered that nearly everyone has an Aussie accent, despite this film ostensibly unfolding 100 miles away from Los Angeles (the film was shot in Queensland). And, for all the glitz and glamour of said luxury beachside hotel, no one ever even mentions going into the ocean.

Spa Weekend is being trailed as a potential successor to Bridesmaids, but this female-led farce from the writers of The Hangover and Bad Moms is one of the flimsiest excuses for a film I've ever seen.
Jon Lucas and Scott Moore are specialists in messy slapstick, but on this occasion the levels of raunch, chaos and hilarity hover near rock-bottom. You could throw a tired hen party in a Swindon Travelodge and drum up more entertainment.
It starts with a relaxing getaway at a deluxe spa resort called Solaris, involving lifelong friends Jane (Leslie Mann), Sophie (Anna Faris) and Coco (Michelle Buteau), all single, 40-something and stressed. They intentionally exclude a fourth friend, Mel (Isla Fisher), for reasons that become apparent when she manages to crash the plan anyway after she's invited by a guilty Sophie at the last minute. She's an erratic, horny, tactless Australian who never saw a mindful yoga session she couldn't sabotage, and sets about making them into the least popular guests in the hotel.
