TV’s Neurodivergent Casting Reckoning
‘The Pitt’ star Tal Anderson and ‘Love on the Spectrum’ creator Cian O’Clery are pushing back on one-note portrayals of autism and broadening representation onscreen.
Television’s portrayal of neurodivergence has long suffered from a persistent blind spot. By casting neurotypical actors to play stereotypical — and often heavily coded yet undiagnosed — white male savant archetypes, Hollywood built a rigid standard that has largely erased women, people of color and the broader diversity of real-world neurodivergent experiences.
“When you lump all neurodivergent perspectives into the same story — like ADHD, dyslexic and autistic adults — without showing the difference in lived experiences, people start to assume that they’re all the same,” says Tal Anderson, a first-time Emmy nominee for The Pitt. “People start to think that autistic people are all low-support needs [i.e., highly functioning] if that’s all they see onscreen. When that happens, an entire half the autistic community is left out of the conversation and, long-term, that’s really damaging for all of us.”

Tal Anderson spent much of her childhood trying to understand how to connect with other people. She didn't speak until she was almost 4, struggled with back-and-forth conversations and, by middle school, was asking her mom to buy her books about how to socialize.
Now, the autistic actor is an Emmy nominee for her performance as Becca King on HBO Max's The Pitt. After her memorable scene in the Season 1 finale with her twin sister Mel, Becca steps into the show's second season and asserts herself as an adult with privacy, bodily autonomy, a boyfriend and a life of her own.
