Former first-round pick Marcus Davenport visits DE-needy Bears

Free agent defensive end Marcus Davenport, a former first-round draft pick, visited the Bears. For a team that added no relevant pass rushers this offseason, Davenport represents a big name. Still, he has just four sacks in the past four seasons after posting nine in 2021.
Davenport knows the Bears, and vice versa — he played for defensive coordinator Dennis Allen with the Saints from 2018-22. After a year with the Vikings, he played two seasons with the Lions. Bears head coach Ben Johnson worked on the Lions staff in 2024. He started seven games for the Lions last year but wasn’t particularly effective — Pro Football Focus ranked him 103rd out of 115 qualified edge rushers.

The Chicago Bears are showing interest in a veteran edge rusher in free agency.
According to the league's transactions wire on Sunday, the Bears brought in former Detroit Lions defensive end Marcus Davenport for a visit.
The visit with Davenport comes just one day after the Bears played their first preseason game of 2026.
While it's nice to see the Bears exploring their options at a position of need, Davenport isn't someone to get excited about.
Davenport is entering his ninth season in the NFL and will turn 30 on Sept. 4.
He spent his first five season with the New Orleans Saints, where he had a few productive seasons, including a nine-sack showing during the 2021 campaign.

Chicago Bears general manager Ryan Poles said he wanted to wait to gauge what the defense had on its roster early in training camp before deciding to be proactive on the market for a defensive end or defensive tackle.
Based on recent developments with the Bears and the market, it’s clear the front office sees a need at a couple of places on the defensive line.
Chicago reportedly called about Tampa Bay Buccaneers defensive tackle Vita Vea, who requested a trade this summer. The Buccaneers don’t have any plans to part with him.
Per the league’s transaction wire, the Bears brought in Marcus Davenport for a workout on Sunday. Davenport has ties to Bears defensive coordinator Dennis Allen, who was his defensive coordinator and head coach with the New Orleans Saints.
