The power outages in northwest Indiana after catastrophic storms this week were so bad that you can see them from space.
NASA satellite images show the difference between light emitted from the northwest Indiana and Chicago area before and after the derecho storms.
"At peak, more than 60% of NIPSCO's electric customers were without power, making this one of the largest outage events in company history," the utility said on its website.
NIPSCO reports 172,000 remain without power, gives estimated restoration timeline
INDIANA (WNDU) – NIPSCO reported that 172,000 customers remain without power as of 9 p.m. CT on Friday, Aug. 14.
The company is calling this the largest outage event in its history.
The outages came after this week’s derecho storm and severe weather. According to NIPSCO, 145,000 customers’ power has been restored since Tuesday’s storm.
More than 60% of NIPSCO’s customers were without power at the outage’s peak.
