‘Phillies Extra’ Q&A: Kevin Stocker on the infield shuffle, why Trea Turner isn’t an outfielder, and more

The Phillies' pennant-winning shortstop in 1993 joined The Inquirer's baseball podcast to discuss all the moving infield parts after the Luis Arraez trade as well as the one player who stayed put.

In trading for Luis Arraez at the deadline, the Phillies displaced three-fourths of their infield with less than 50 games left in the season.

Kevin Stocker, the Phillies’ pennant-winning shortstop in 1993 and now a member of the radio broadcast team, joined The Inquirer’s Phillies Extra podcast, to share his thoughts on all the moving parts — Bryson Stott to third base, Alec Bohm to first, and Bryce Harper to right field — as well as the one player who stayed put: shortstop Trea Turner.

Phillies notes: What’s behind Trea Turner’s defensive improvement, the Zack Wheeler rubber controversy and more

PHILADELPHIA — The noise around Trea Turner’s defense at shortstop has quieted in recent days.

It hasn’t been a great season defensively for Turner, who is second in MLB in errors with 18. But he has not made an error since July 27, and he believes an adjustment to his setup and a better rhythm are the key to his improvement.

“I feel like getting in rhythm, just having some routine ground balls and getting back in rhythm was part of it,” Turner said. “But I also feel like I kind of found out at least something that I think was kind of causing it. I just felt like I was setting up a little too early, kind of creating bad hops for myself. And then I think I had some tough plays where I expect myself to make them, but not necessarily easyily, and I feel like I just couldn’t get a routine ground ball to get back in a rhythm.”
