California Democrats defy Gavin Newsom and Xavier Becerra as they vote to back billionaires tax
California Democrats officially endorsed a controversial billionaire wealth tax on Sunday, putting the state’s Democratic Party at odds with Gov. Gavin Newsom as well as their own gubernatorial nominee Xavier Becerra ahead of November’s election.
Delegates at the California Democratic Party convention in San Diego voted to back Proposition 40, a ballot measure that would impose a one-time 5% tax on roughly 200 California billionaires.
“Every endorsement we make is earned, not given,” California Democratic Party Chair Rusty Hicks said in a statement to the Post.
“California Democrats take a deliberative approach to our endorsement process that puts our values first and ensures our members have a meaningful voice in shaping the future of our state.”

SACRAMENTO — In a blow to backers of a proposed state billionaires tax, a handful of California labor unions joined the growing campaign against the controversial ballot measure while another labor giant opted to remain on the sideline.
A collection of unions — among them the California State Council of Laborers, United Domestic Workers and the California Police Chiefs Assn. — announced their opposition to the measure Thursday, a sign of simmering divisions over the proposal, which will appear on the November ballot as Proposition 40.
