Voters face a choice of progressive ex-congresswoman Cori Bush or pro-Israel incumbent Wesley Bell on Tuesday
The pastor of a historically Black church on St Louis’s north side, Rodrick Burton, has watched with bewilderment as the congressional race in his district has drawn national attention not about the bloodshed in his community, but rather in Gaza.
“As a pastor who’s had eight members murdered, violence over there is terrible,” Burton said of the conflict in the Middle East.
“We have to deal with the problems right in our metropolitan area,” Burton added. “While there’s kinship and stuff … you’re talking about blood overseas, blood on the TV. We got blood right here in our metropolitan area.”
Progressive Cori Bush seeks to return to Washington by ousting moderate Democrat
Last month, Rep. Wesley Bell and former Rep. Cori Bush sparred in a joint radio appearance over who had done the most to help St. Louis residents after a pair of devastating natural disasters ripped through the community.
Bell described how, after a tornado hit the district in May 2025, he reached out to every member of the stateâs mostly Republican delegation to get millions in funding from the Federal Emergency Management Agency. Bush said that after the district was hit with flooding in 2022, she took a different approach to draw resources: hitting TV, radio and the internet.
âIâve been criticized for wanting to be on TV a lot, but when Iâm on TV Iâm talking about St. Louis, because thatâs how people know,â she said. âThe more you speak about it, the more the urgency is there, and the awareness.â

'Never been friends': Missouri primary rematch features Democratic rifts
Few Democratic primaries featuring a liberal incumbent fighting off a progressive populist in 2026 have become as personal as Rep. Wesley Bell and former Rep. Cori Bush's rematch in Missouri.
Both came to prominence during the Black Lives Matter movement in Ferguson after Michael Brown's fatal shooting by police in 2014.
Each toppled an incumbent: Bell defeated St. Louis County Prosecutor Bob McCulloch in 2018 and Bush upset Rep. Lacy Clay in 2020.
Now the two are locking horns in the Aug. 4 primary for a deep blue seat covering St. Louis and its northern suburbs that has touched several raw nerves in the party, from anger at the establishment to who is the blame for President Donald Trump's return to power.
