Reds’ Tyler Stephenson could be team’s best trade piece in market low on catchers

CINCINNATI — Cincinnati Reds catcher Tyler Stephenson remembers a conversation he had with his wife about how one swing can change an entire season.
It’s not as if the 29-year-old catcher made a major change to his swing or approach this season, but he was still searching for something. On Father’s Day at Yankee Stadium, he found it.
It came in a fourth-inning at-bat against New York Yankees starter Elmer Rodríguez. Stephenson connected on a 3-1 fastball from the right-hander, launching it 401 feet and into the Reds’ bullpen.

The Yankees are known to be looking for catching help and have checked in on Reds catcher Tyler Stephenson, reports Jon Heyman of The New York Post. Heyman also mentions Adley Rutschman of the Orioles and Hunter Goodman of the Rockies as backstops the Yanks have called about.
Stephenson has suddenly become a very important name ahead of the trade deadline, which wasn’t the case a few weeks ago. Through June 3, Stephenson was hitting just .187/.287/.307. Though he is an impending free agent, he was an afterthought in trade chatter as more of the attention was placed on Ryan Jeffers of the Twins.

New York Yankees interested in Reds catcher Tyler Stephenson, per reports
The last place Cincinnati Reds are limping towards the August 3rd trade deadline at just 51-57, still buried in the busy National League Wild Card standings 5.5 games back of the final spot. That comes with the caveat that there are six NL clubs they’d have to jump to earn their way into that spot – the Philadelphia Phillies, San Diego Padres, Miami Marlins, Pittsburgh Pirates, Washington Nationals, and St. Louis Cardinals.
At quick glance, at least three of those clubs are likely going to be buyers at the deadline. So, the Reds are between a rock and a hard place, and anything other than a miracle win streak this weekend will likely send them into at least some mode of selling.
