What Phillies pitcher Andrew Painter is working on after demotion to Triple A

ALLENTOWN, Pa. — In the aftermath of a seven-run outing in Triple A, Andrew Painter looked at his metrics. He was surprised by what he saw: His fastball, which opponents had a .583 average against that game, had produced its best underlying numbers since he underwent Tommy John surgery three years prior.

“But it was getting hit,” Painter said of his July 10 outing for the Lehigh Valley IronPigs. “I go back and look, and I wasn’t throwing sweepers in-zone. I wasn’t throwing a changeup in-zone. My sliders were down for chase, so there was no threat of anything outside of the fastball to be in-zone. Guys were just sitting on it. … It’s really (important) just establishing some sort of off-speed or different offering that you can throw in-zone whenever you want.”

PHILADELPHIA — Phillies rookie right-hander Andrew Painter is in Baltimore, and he will pitch on Friday night against the Orioles, a source told MLB.com. The club has not confirmed the news.

Painter opened this season in the Phillies' rotation but was optioned to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on June 18 after posting a 7.06 ERA across 14 outings (12 starts) in the Majors. Painter has fared better at Triple-A, allowing two runs or fewer in all but one start.

In his most recent outing, against Indianapolis on Sunday, the 23-year-old Painter scattered five hits and allowed one run over six innings, striking out six without walking a batter.

Phillies' Andrew Painter: Will pitch Friday for Phillies

The Phillies will recall Painter from Triple-A Lehigh Valley to pitch Friday in Baltimore, Matt Gelb of The Athletic reports.

It's unclear whether it will be a traditional start or another arrangement, but the 23-year-old will get another chance in the majors. Painter was sent down to Triple-A Lehigh Valley in mid-June after logging a 7.06 ERA in 65 innings for the Phillies. He's pitched well in four of five outings at Lehigh Valley, though, allowing three runs with a 14:1 K:BB across 11 frames in his last two starts.
