Jahmyr Gibbs did not practice Wednesday, likely holding in

Via multiple reporters on the scene, running back Jahmyr Gibbs did not participate in Wednesday’s practice to open training camp.

While head coach Dan Campbell did not address the situation during his pre-practice press conference, Gibbs is eligible for an extension and the two sides have reportedly been working toward a resolution on a deal.

The Lions posted a picture of Gibbs having reported, which is an indication of a hold-in as opposed to a hold-out.

The No. 12 overall pick of the 2023 draft, Gibbs has been selected to the Pro Bowl in each of his three seasons. In 2025, he rushed for 1,223 yards with 13 touchdowns while catching 77 passes for 616 yards with five TDs.

Lions' star running back seeking new contract skips practice. What to know

The Detroit Lions running back didn't participate in the team's first training camp practice on July 29. While there was no reason provided for his absence, it is notable that Dan Campbell didn't list Gibbs during his injury rundown ahead of the session.

"You guys know how we feel about Gibbs, and all of our guys," Campbell said. "So we'll take this as it comes. This will kind of continue. … Both sides (are) working through something, and we'll take it as it comes."

Detroit picked up the running back's fifth-year option in April, extending his contract through the 2027 season. Thanks to multiple Pro Bowl appearances, Gibbs will make $14.293 million on the option, which is a sizable boost over the $5.677 million cap hit he will have in 2026. It is equal to the franchise tag salary for the position, as defined by the fifth-year option tiers.

Adam Schefter hints Jahmyr Gibbs extension could be coming soon

Detroit Lions RB Jahmyr Gibbs could get an extension in the next couple weeks, per Adam Schefter.

It’s been eerily quiet when it comes to a potential contract extension for Detroit Lions running back Jahmyr Gibbs, but ESPN’s Adam Schefter suggested the silence could break very soon.

In an interview with local Detroit sports reporter Brad Galli, Schefter said there’s buzz about a Gibbs extension coming down the pike in the next couple weeks—with not as much known about a potential Sam LaPorta extension.

“I think the Gibbs thing could be relatively quick, whatever that is,” Scheter told Galli. “And, LaPorta, I haven’t heard as much on, but I think they’ll be moving in the running back market in the coming week plus.”
