Cubs DFA veteran pitcher Jameson Taillon
ST. LOUIS – The Chicago Cubs on Monday selected the contract of right-handed pitcher Andrew Wantz from Triple-A Iowa. In a corresponding move, the Cubs designated right-handed pitcher Jameson Taillon for assignment.
Taillon, 34, went 2-6 with a 5.92 ERA (50 ER/76.0 IP) in 15 starts this season with the Cubs. He was set to be a free agent at the end of the year after signing with the Cubs on a four-year, $68 million contract over the 2022-23 offseason. Taillon went 33-31 with a 4.21 ERA over 96 games with the North Siders.
Wantz, 30, is 2-1 with a 4.32 ERA (12 ER/25.0 IP) in seven appearances, including three starts, with the I-Cubs this season. Prior to being signed as a minor league free agent by the Cubs on June 6, Wantz was with the Tampa Bay organization. He made one relief appearance this season for the Rays and went 2-0 with a 7.04 ERA (18 ER/23.0 IP) in 18 appearances, one start, with Triple-A Durham.
Cubs Designate Jameson Taillon For Assignment
The Cubs announced that they have selected the contract of left-hander Andrew Wantz. Right-hander Jameson Taillon has been designated for assignment as the corresponding move.
Taillon, 34, is having the worst season of his career. He has made 15 starts for the Cubs, missing about six weeks due to a hamstring strain. In his 76 innings pitched, he has allowed 5.96 earned runs per nine. He has allowed 25 home runs, second-most in the majors. Jeffrey Springs is ahead of him at 27, but Springs has made 21 starts and also pitches for the Athletics, who play their home games at a hitter-friendly minor league park.
The Cubs are deciding to move on. Given his results, it’s understandable, but it’s also mildly surprising given the larger context of the club. The Cubs have been really hit hard on the injury front this year, particularly in the rotation. Cade Horton required Tommy John surgery and is out for the season. Justin Steele has hit a few setbacks in his attempt to come back from last year’s internal brace surgery. He may come back this year but only as a reliever. Ben Brown is sidelined by a stress reaction in his neck and has an uncertain timeline. Edward Cabrera is out with a hamstring strain.

Cubs roster move: Jameson Taillon DFA, Andrew Wantz added
After Sunday’s game, Cubs manager Craig Counsell had said the team would “discuss” what to do with Jameson Taillon’s next scheduled start, which would have come up Friday against the Yankees at Wrigley Field.
Taillon won’t make that start — nor any others for the Cubs, as the team announced Monday by press release that he had been designated for assignment.
To replace Taillon on the active roster, the Cubs selected the contract of right-hander Andrew Wantz from Triple-A Iowa.
Wantz is clearly on the roster just to be an extra bullpen arm for a few days. He is 2-1 with a 4.32 ERA (12 ER/25.0 IP) in seven appearances, including three starts, with the I-Cubs this season. Prior to being signed as a minor league free agent by the Cubs on June 6, Wantz was with the Tampa Bay organization. He made one relief appearance this season for the Rays and went 2-0 with a 7.04 ERA (18 ER/23.0 IP) in 18 appearances, one start, with Triple-A Durham. Wantz also made 91 appearances (four starts) for the Angels from 2021-24, posting a 3.88 ERA and 1.158 WHIP.
