Sunday afternoon Orioles game thread: vs. Braves, 1:35pm ET

The O’s look to win their first home series of the second half in the rubber match vs. Atlanta

Probable pitchers: RHP Shane Baz (4-9, 4.05 ERA, 105 Ks) vs. RHP Reynaldo López (4-3, 3.95 ERA, 60 Ks)

Through two games against the NL East-leading Braves, we’ve gotten two thrillers that have felt an awful lot like playoff games. This afternoon, the Orioles will try to take the rubber match and move a step closer to a playoff spot.

Both Games 1 and 2 vs. Atlanta were one-run games that the Orioles had every chance to win. On Friday, Taylor Ward failed to capitalize on a bases-loaded, two-outs-in-the-9th opportunity, and defensive miscues ultimately cost the O’s in extras. Last night, Dylan Beavers did what Ward couldn’t, delivering a walk-off single to right to tie the series at one game apiece.

Orioles lineup and notes for series finale against Braves

The Orioles go for the series win against the Braves this afternoon with Dylan Beavers leading off again after last night’s walk-off single.

Christian Encarnacion-Strand is at third base and batting fifth. Colton Cowser is in center field.

Taylor Ward has reached base in 18 straight games, tied for the third-longest active streak in the majors. It’s the longest by an Oriole this season.

The bullpen has a 2.73 ERA since June 16 that’s third best in the majors behind the Yankees (2.35) and Astros (2.65). The pitching staff has posted a 3.42 ERA in 54 games since May 24 that’s also third best in the majors behind the Tigers (3.25) and Yankees (3.35).

Reynaldo López and Shane Baz set to square off in Braves-Orioles rubber match

The Braves attempt to snatch a series from the O’s at Camden Yards

A closely-fought series between the NL East-leading Atlanta Braves and the currently-hot Baltimore Orioles will come down to the Sunday matinee game, as Reynaldo López will be looking to make a bounce-back start in order to help potentially push the Braves to another series win.

López will be entering this game fresh off the heels of one of his worst starts of the season so far, which is when he got tagged for five runs over 4.1 innings against the Padres. It would be easy to chalk it up to it simply being a case of the Padres playing the Braves tough as usual but that start came ten days after López got hit hard by the Cardinals for four runs over five innings, so it could be a case of López running into a real rough patch.
