Thunderstorms, monsoon could impact early week travel
As we head into another week, parts of the U.S. could see weather-induced travel woes. Rain and thunderstorms will impact parts of the Southeast and Great Lakes Sunday into Monday, including places like Chicago, Detroit, Charlotte, Atlanta and Orlando. Meanwhile, the monsoon will ramp up across the West, potentially impacting travel through Phoenix, Albuquerque and Denver. Meteorologist Caitlin Kaiser times it out here.

Travel conditions could become unsettled by the end of the week across the Midwest, spreading across much of the East by Saturday. Severe storms could impact travel in places like New York, Philadelphia, D.C., Cleveland, Indianapolis and Chicago.
Monsoonal storms will continue across Arizona and New Mexico, creeping into Utah, Colorado and Wyoming on Friday. Not a great time to head to the Grand Canyon or the arroyos in Utah and New Mexico. Some storms will continue to percolate in west Texas, too, but not with the intensity of what we saw earlier this week.
If you're traveling to the Northeast or Midwest, bring a mask and some glasses to shield you from intense smoke coming from southern Canada. While temps will back off for the Northeast over the weekend, the center of the country will see more heat build.

Heat, rain and smoke could make travel conditions bumpy into the weekend from coast to coast.
Heavy rain is possible for the Southeast the rest of the week and into the weekend, where flash flooding could increase travel delays.
You'll want lighter clothes, wide-brim hats, sunscreen and plenty of water if you're traveling through the Plains, Northwest and Southwest this week. By the weekend ahead, the heat will expand to the Plains. Highs in these areas will be in the 90s to 100s.
There will be some smoke lingering across the Northwest; enough depletion in air quality could occur that it may be unhealthy for most people. Bring your mask or make plans indoors. You can see where smoke is on the maps below.
