2 weeks after a Mississippi football player’s death, many questions loom
As Nolan Wellsâ family prepares to lay the 18-year-old to rest on Monday, they will do so without knowing why his young life was cut so tragically short.
Itâs been 16 days since Wells and his friends went on a Fourth of July boat trip to Horn Island â a popular destination for holiday revelers off the Mississippi coast with no shelters, no facilities and no communications.
His friends made it back home. Wells, a student and wide receiver at Southwest Mississippi Community College, did not. His body was found two days later, on July 6, facedown in the water off the shoreline of Horn Island by a National Park Service agent.
Funeral service for Nolan Wells to be led by the Rev. Al Sharpton
We lost federal funding one year ago, leaving a $4 million gap. We need 500 donors to help us close it.
Nolan Xavier Wells, an 18-year-old found dead after taking a July 4 boat trip with friends to a Gulf Coast island, will be remembered Monday by his family and civil rights leaders at a church in his hometown of Ocean Springs, Mississippi.
The funeral will be officiated by the Rev. Al Sharpton, with a call to justice delivered by the family's lawyer, Ben Crump, a prominent civil rights attorney. Wells' mother, Christine Wonsley, said they would use the occasion to celebrate the life of their son, who she described as a "bright light" and a "sensitive soul."

NBC News saw Wells’ casket arrive at the church just before 9 a.m. local time.
Hundreds of people stood in line outside the church ahead of the service at noon local time, waiting to get in for the visitation, including almost the entire Ocean Springs High School football team. The funeral turnout is expected to be large.
